10 Reasons to Embrace and Be Grateful for ADHD and Clutter

From Chaos, Creativity and the Mystery of Missing Socks

As we hit the pause button tomorrow to give thanks, I was pondering things that aren’t necessarily our first go-to on the gratitude list, such as good health or loved ones.

But if we look again at those things that we may not necessarily be grateful for at first glance, we will find silver linings. So, on this day-before-Thanksgiving, I give you 10 reasons to embrace and be grateful for the chaos of ADHD and clutter. Let’s go!

Here are 10 reasons to be grateful for ADHD and clutter, reframing them as opportunities for growth, creativity, and connection:

·       Creative Thinking: Does your brain go to cartoon-land sometimes or is it just me? If you ever see me giggling to myself in the checkout lane, this ability to amuse myself helps the longest line seem shorter.

·       Opportunities for Reflection: Clutter can help you reflect on powerful questions such as, “What the hell was I thinking when I bought that?” to “So, THAT’S where that went!”

·       Hyperfocus Superpower: No rabbit hole is too deep! This comes with the added bonus of the ability to tune out annoying people.

·       Hidden Gems: You may just find that missing Darn Tough Sock that you paid $18 on last year’s Black Friday deals.

·       Energy and Enthusiasm: We are the ones wearing the tee-shirt that says, “I’m here, let’s start the party!” Well, unless you’re an introvert and prefer to direct your energy on that stack of books on your nightstand. It’s all good!

·       Chance to Declutter: You may discover your very own little black hole and discover new universes along the way!

·       Empathy and Intuition: We understand challenges in ways non-ADHD will never grasp. This is a helpful tool in preventing the occasional urge to slap annoying people.

·       Inspiration for Change: Clutter can help you realize your dreams of running away from it all and establishing a new identity via your very own Witness Protection Program.

·       Resilience: This quality is so underrated! Especially when you need to dig deep to have the strength to down that extra slice of pumpkin pie. (Remember to wear your eatin’ pants!)

·       A Chance to Help Others: Go ahead! Dump all your stuff on an organized friend or relative to deepen their understanding of your struggles. Think of their reactions! (And be sure to post pics on Facebook.)

Okay, silliness aside, I am truly grateful for YOU, dear reader. And I wish for you peace and joy as we enter the holiday season.

Now go enjoy that extra serving!
