Downsizing Your Home

Downsizing your home can be a challenging and emotion process. Often the need to do so is triggered by a major life change such as ageing parents, divorce, or unemployment.

One of the reasons I am so passionate about minimalism is because it’s not a matter if IF something happens to your life situation, it is WHEN. So, my first word of encouragement to anyone needing to downsize is this. Begin downsizing before you have to.

Start with the boxes that you never unpacked from when you moved in 20 years ago. Talk with your adult children about what they are interested in keeping after you have passed on. If there is ever a time for brutal honesty, now is the time.

Downsizing isn’t just about parting with items. What you will gain is immeasurable. Peace of mind. Gratitude from your adult children that they don’t have to deal with your stuff. Save money on the expenses of a larger home. And my favorite benefit - greater ease in focusing on what matters most in life.

PS If you are in the Northern Arizona area, my friend Faun Duns is a senior relocation specialist and owns Caring Transitions of Arizona. She is fabulous to work with! Here’s her website.
