Capsule Wardrobes

I love capsule wardrobes! Granted, I’ve also joked that I would be happy wearing a Star Trek uniform. Why? It would automate a daily decision - the “what to wear” conundrum. And because I am fulltime RV’er, space consideration is a big deal. (Read: I have no closet space.)

So what is a capsule wardrobe? In short, it’s wardrobe basics in neutral colors like black, navy, or taupe. Pieces can be easily swapped out to mix and match. Think of these basics as “the cake.” “The frosting” refers to accessories and is where things can get fun. (A hat tip to the author’s of Nothing to Wear for the cake/frosting description.)

Like so many things in my minimalist/intentionalist journey, I have found great joy and more freedom in having less. But my transition to a more cohesive wardrobe has brought an unexpected surprise to me.

I am actually enjoying dressing up more. I suspect it is because of what scientists have discovered and that is this. When we humans get overloaded by too many choices, we tend to get overwhelmed.

By having my basic palette (AKA “cake) already lined out, I have the bandwidth to play around with fun accessories.

What about you? Have you considered uncluttering your closet and becoming more intentional in your wardrobe? You may find yourself embracing the capsule wardrobe yourself!

PS The aforementioned book is a great read and will help you not only establish a capsule wardrobe, it will help you determine your fashion style. My style is classic/whimsical.
