10 declutter projects that take 10 minutes

If you are up to your ears in overwhelm because the piles have gotten a wee bit (or a huge bit!) out of control, fear not. Here are some short sassy projects to help you build success and encourage you to get unstuck and take action on the clutter.

First - turn on your favorite tunes and pour yourself a beverage. Then grab a timer and set it for 10 minutes. Granted, some of your hot spots might take longer than 10 minutes but the idea is to break the big task down into little tasks. And never, ever underestimate how much you can actually accomplish in 10 minutes.

Ready for the list? Here it is:

  1. Junk drawer. Most of the stuff in there can go directly into a waste bin.

  2. Car trunk. I like to bring out a laundry basket for this task. Load it all up in the basket and then distribute items to their rightful home.

  3. Glove box. When I’m a passenger, I will often do this on a long drive. While you’re at it, clean out those little catch-alls in the door too.

  4. A pantry shelf. Notice I just said “a” shelf. Pantries can easily take several hours. Just focus on one. If that’s too much, just pick one side of the shelf.

  5. Recipe box/binder. Yes, I know a lot of folks just get recipes off the internet but for me, I love my collection of recipes from through the years. I regularly sort these to keep them tidy.

  6. Your nightstand. Be sure to give the heave-ho to any accumulation in the drawer as well.

  7. Makeup bag. If it’s expired or you haven’t used it in 6 months - out it goes! Ditto for items that aren’t quite the right shade but you hang on to them because, well, you know - $$. Pitch it! That’s called a sunk cost.

  8. Windowsills. Do you like to put little mementos there like I do? I enjoy them for a while but then it gets cluttered. Give your sills a purge and give ‘em a quick swipe with a cleaning rag. I promise your room will fill brighter.

  9. Spice cabinet. I see that 12 year old tin of paprika. Buh-bye!

  10. Underwear drawer. Was it just my weird childhood upbringing or do others end up putting random stuff in the top drawer of their dresser? (And most folks DO use the top drawer for underwear, right?)

There you have it. Short and sweet! Now, go declutter!
