What's your waste size?
I was reading the book, “Throw Away Nation” by Jeff Dondero and was surprised at a few of the tidbits I learned. Here are two of them:
80-85% of discarded clothes end up in landfill. (Please keep this in mind before you donated that stained shirt to the thrift store.) Some thrift stores will accept “poundage” meaning clothing unfit for wear will be sent to a rag making factory. You’ll need to ask around because this isn’t often advertised.
The fashion industry is the second dirtiest business in the world. Oil is first.
That second one really blew my mind. Our love of cheap clothing is costing this planet dearly.
How do we take action?
Shop intentionally - make sure you’re not supporting a sweatshop.
Buy higher quality clothes that will last longer. Think classics and quality. (I’m a huge fan of capsule wardrobes.)
Shop thrift stores where you can often find designer labels for a fraction of the cost. I prefer the local ones that support local charities - like a battered women’s shelter or an animal rescue.
Start a clothing swap with your friends. These are so much fun! Everyone brings clothes/accessories they no longer wear and well, you swap clothing. Turn it into a brunch and don’t forget the mimosas!
By becoming more intentional in your fashion choices, your closet will thank you as well. And so will the planet.
