2 simple tricks to break phone addiction
Phone addiction is one of the biggest sources of head clutter. It’s human catnip and a guaranteed way to stay distracted and dis your companions. (Don’t you just love it when someone is scrolling on their phone while you're talking to them?) And with Covid-19, it’s easy to get even more compulsive checking our newsfeeds.
First a short word about those newsfeeds. People. LIMIT THOSE COVID-19 UPDATES! Yes, I am shouting that. Besides staying home and frequent handwashing, there is NOTHING you can do about how many cases, how many deaths and what the curve is doing. Why feed fear and anxiety?
I look at the worldometers in the morning and glance at a few headlines and call it good. I am no good to myself or others if I am getting worked up with fear and spreading that emotional contagion to others. (And seriously, worry will weaken your immune system.)
Okay. Enough of the rant. Here are the 2 simple tricks to break phone addiction:
Go gray. I’m not talking about your hair color, silly. (Though that is indeed a topic worthy of discussion. It took me several years before I allowed the silver to shine.) Turn your phone to greyscale.
I am truly shocked at how this small measure has broken Shiny Object Syndrome (SOS) by removing the bright colors that catch my eye and lure me in. (Hat tip to Jevonnah Ellison for sharing this tip with me.)
You’ll need to Google instructions on how to do this as it does take a few steps.
Remove FaceBook from your phone. I did this once before and kept it off my phone for a few years. And then I got a new phone and well, hello, Facebook addiction 2.0.
It’s easy squeezy….though you may experience withdrawals at first. We humans are uncomfortable being present and holding silence. But that’s where healing lies for the anxiety that often ails us.
